Environmental Impacts

Aerosols influence the environment in a number of ways including the transport of pollutants, their effects on climate, and their role in atmospheric chemistry. In Canada’s case, aerosols have a far-reaching impact on the environment, contributing to acid deposition, reduced visibility, and the dispersion of pesticides. Studies in this area of research are examining heterogeneous reactions on aerosols surfaces, the relationships between aerosol composition and cloud formation and the influence of composition on their optical properties. An understanding of the roles aerosols play in the environment is critical for environmental conservation, and the mitigation of its destruction.
